Graded work comes home weekly, please make sure that you check your child's binder each night.
You will receive a slip of colored paper with the DFA score on it. Please look at those carefully.
You can also setup a FOCUS account to see all grades anytime. Contact the office to do so.
Progress Reports come home on Tuesday, September 19th and I will be scheduling parent conferences starting next week.
I know that the new math has been very challenging for some students. It is a new curriculum for us and we are working to implement it with fidelity but also in a way that meets the needs of our students. I have found a way to add math groups, so that students who are struggling will have small group support from me. Students who are successful with the lesson will have other enrichment opportunities. It is very important that students complete the math homework as practice of the lesson. In addition I am adding many links to my math page, so that additional instruction and practice can happen at home. Khan Academy is an excellent site that uses videos to teach math concepts. They have added Eureka Math/Engage NY videos, so students can relearn the lesson of the day if needed. Please look at the math page of my website to find the links.
Compass Learning: (*flier coming home Friday)
This is the BEST online resource to help your child improve their STAR scores. It takes the data from STAR and creates a learning path for each child. Every child has a unique set of standards, lessons and activities that they need to work on and Compass Learning does that. It will go back and review earlier grade material as well as go beyond our 3rd grade material. So it meets your child at their level. As your child masters the skills on their path, the level adjusts. If the child needs additional practice then it will provide that. Students access Compass Learning in class as part of their small group center rotations. It would be very beneficial for students to use it at home as well. Just 20 minutes a day can have a very big impact. I will be sending home a list of students logins, so you will have that. Many students already know their username and password.
We use a patterned based spelling program. On Mondays students take a pretest to determine their ability with the pattern on the week. Your child will sometimes be on list A or B. Everyone should study the high frequency words.
Students are tested on Fridays on their list. Spelling words are glued into their planner for the week. Spelling is worth 5% of your child's ELA grade.
